Maximizing storage efficiency for critical infrastructure in the UK

When it comes to critical national infrastructure, reliability is everything. UK regulations mandate that all essential spare parts required for the operation of power stations must be readily available within the country. For Drax Power Station - the UK’s largest renewable power generator - this presented the challenge of efficiently storing a vast inventory of spare parts within their existing central stores.

In October 2023, Drax partnered with Pickfaces, the exclusive distributor of Storeganizer in the UK, to explore innovative ways to optimize their storage capacity without expanding their warehouse footprint. The project began with a 2-bay trial installation, showcasing how Storeganizer’s vertical, flexible storage system could transform spare parts management. Utilizing a combination of S and XS-sized pockets, the solution proved ideal for accommodating a wide variety of parts in a compact, organized manner.

The success of this initial setup quickly demonstrated the value of Storeganizer’s space-saving approach, leading Drax to expand their installation in phases:

Phase 1 – January 2024: 4 additional bays installed.
Phase 2 – November 2024: A major rollout added 25 more bays.
Phase 3 – January 2025: A final extension brought in 6 additional bays.

Today, Drax’s central stores feature a total of 37 Storeganizer bays, efficiently equipped with S and XS pocket sizes tailored to their diverse spare parts inventory. This smart storage solution ensures critical components are always accessible, well-organized and stored in a highly space-optimized way. On top of that, since Storeganizer does not require any electricity, it’s a sustainable solution!

This collaboration not only ensures compliance with UK legal requirements but also drives significant operational benefits by:
